Sherry L. Appel, JD, DVM, DVsC, CCRT
Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Surgeons
Dr. Appel earned her first degree in mathematics/computational science from UCLA. Thereafter, she obtained her Juris Doctorate (law degree) from Boalt Hall at UC Berkeley. Dr. Appel left her career as a corporate attorney to pursue her dream of becoming a veterinarian, taking her veterinary pre-requisites while working full time. After graduating sixth in her class at UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, she did an internship at the University of Missouri. This was immediately followed by surgical residency at the University of Guelph in Canada, earning her Doctorate of Veterinary Science in 2009. In 2010, she became a board certified surgeon. Dr. Appel joined the practice of Dr. Gary Brown, a renowned veterinary surgeon, and fine-tuned her skills. While there, Dr. Appel became a preceptor for Western Veterinary College and enjoys teaching veterinary students clinical approaches to solving patient concerns. As part of her own continuing education, she became certified in canine rehabilitation.
Dr. Appel is skilled in a wide range of procedures. She has successfully tackled complex orthopedic challenges from angular limb deformity to limb lengthening, and treating non-healing fractures with use of cutting edge biologic innovations such as recombinant bone morphogenic protein. Beyond orthopedics, her practice includes neurosurgery, soft tissue surgery, and oncologic/reconstructive surgery.
Dr. Appel joined Silicon Valley Veterinary Specialists (SVVS) because the practice strives to provide the best medicine, the best care and because of its commitment to the community it serves. Please reach out to Dr. Appel when you want a doctor to take the time to understand the needs of you and your pet, and to address your concerns, whether they are simple or complex.
Away from work, Dr. Appel lives in south San Jose with her husband and rescued cats with medical problems. She enjoys outdoor activities, and loves to see dogs hiking in the local parks
